Don't Feed the Basset

Well, it's not great news, but Fred has a diagnosis. He has a rather hearty infection, likely brought on by eating something he shouldn't have. It's his second episode of what Dr. Nancy calls "garbage gut" and like the first time, his inability to keep his slobbery jaws off of non-food items has landed him overnight IVs and the rapid healing only IV drugs can bring.

No, we don't have a clue what, when, or even where said toxin came from. Senior hound that he is, he doesn't roam like he once did. He hasn't been out of our sight, save working hours, and bless his clumsy heart, he leaves a trail of evidence when he does get into things that aren't his at home. But, Dr. Nancy is confident the fluid push will keep reducing the fever and will eventually motivate the gunk of undigested food to move on, and she predicts that Fredders will walk out to leave with me tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks so much again for your kind words and support. It has kept me sane. The day is coming when both of our aged dogs will need me to let go, but it seems we've bought more time for now.

Good news, indeed. Weims are notorious for garbage gut, so I know whereof you speak. Poor Mr. Fred, though. I'll be happy when he's home with Mom, Dad and the Mugster.

Oh dear :( I didn't have time to check blogs at work - I'm SO glad Freddy's going to be OK it seems. Poor guy. I'd say to howl and yowl at him for me, but I suspect that would not be a good idea when he first gets home. Sending so much love and prayers your way dear one :(

I'm new to DOT and found you on the doggie blog roll. I am so glad that Fred will be OK, it's scary, isn't it? they are helpless and depend on us to save them. But gee, dogs are something else. They don't eat what they shouldn't.

Oh OK, forget that one . . . floss, q-tips, mouses (whole) . . .

I'm so sorry to hear about Fred! Darn you Fred for trying to eat 'those' things again. I'm glad to hear that he is on the mend. If only we could speak Dog/Cat to know what they are thinking and to communicate better with our beloved pets. My thoughts are with you and I am sending you and Fred big hugs and cats paw love too from Nicolae and Owen....

I hope Fredders gets better soon! I'm glad to know that you know what is going on. There is nothing worse than not knowing!

Are you heading to the VA Fiber Fest on Saturday? If you are, give me an email, and I'd love to meet up and see you again.

Oh, bless his little heart. It's so hard when your doggie is under the weather.

All the best to Fred, and tell him Flex and Jayda say "Hi" and "Get Well Soon"!!

I'm so glad Fred's diagnosis is something the IV drugs can help heal! It's nice to know Dr. Nancy is so confident Fred will walk out with you tomorrow.

Well, forget my email ?, I just found my answer. I should know you better than that, that you would blog it. What to do with that Fred, I guess just keep on loving him. If he wasn't so sick, we would have to get on to him for scaring his very loving parents. He will be in my prayers and since Dylan has already gone to sleep, Austin will be the one to pray for him tonight. Hugs to you and the boys.
